MADRAS HC ORDERS TN GOVERNMENT TO ENACT LAW TO REMOVE SEEMAI KARUVELAM TREES:

·         The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has ordered Tamil Nadu government to enact a law with prohibitory and penal clauses to eradicate Seemai Karuvelam (prosopis juliflora) trees within two months.
·         Seemai Karuvelam is invasive species of tree harmful to the environment.
·         It sucks lot of water ultimately affect the environment and agricultural activities.
·         Seemai Karuvelam tree species are native to West Africa.
·         It was brought to Tamil Nadu in 1960s as fuelwood.
·         It disrupts the local ecosystem of its habitation by soaking in all the ground water near it.
·         It is an invasive species that has infiltrated the water bodies and dry lands of Tamil Nadu.

INDIA’S RADHANAGAR BEACH IN ANDAMAN ISLANDS FEATURES IN TOP 10, RANKS 8 IN THE WORLD:

·         Radhanagar on the Havelock Island in the Andamans has featured among the top 10 in TripAdvisor’s ‘World’s Travellers’ Choice Award-Winning Beaches’.
·         The Radhanagar beach has secured No 8 position in the world and first spot in Asia.

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY: FEBRUARY 28:

·         National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28th February to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman.
·         Theme was “Science and Technology for Especially Abled Persons”.


ADVANCE PRICING AGREEMENTS (APAS) SCHEME:

·         The Union Government had introduced the APA Scheme in the Income-tax Act in 2012 and the “Rollback” provisions were introduced to it in 2014.
·         The scheme endeavours to provide certainty to taxpayers in domain of transfer pricing issues by specifying the methods of pricing and setting the prices of international transactions in advance.
·         The progress of APA Scheme appreciated nationally and internationally strengthens Government’s resolve of fostering a non-adversarial tax regime in a fair and transparent manner.

TRANSFER PRICING:

·         It is referred to the fixing of the price for goods and services sold in transactions between related legal subsidiaries (entities of a big company) based in different countries within an enterprise.
·         It affects cash flow, investment decisions and performance indicators from a multinational company point of view.
·         It affects the amounts paid as corporate tax to the Government.

GOVERNMENT SIGNS FINANCING AGREEMENT WITH WORLD BANK FOR TEJASWINI PROJECT:

·         The Union Government has signed a Financing Agreement with World Bank for IDA credit of $63 million for the Tejaswini Socio-Economic Empowerment of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) Project.
·         It is World Bank’s first project in India solely focused on the welfare of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged between 14 and 24 to complete their secondary level education and provide relevant skills for job market.

ABOUT TEJASWINI PROJECT

·         It seeks to empower adolescent girls with basic life skills to acquire market driven skill training or completion of secondary education, depending on the inclination of the beneficiary. Its three main components are
·         Expanding social, educational and economic opportunities: Support AGYW to achieve greater social, educational, and economic empowerment at community level and institutional level.
·         Intensive service delivery: It will evaluate more intensive community-level service delivery models focused on increasing AGYW’s access to educational interventions, training and employment opportunities.
·         State capacity-building and implementation support: It aims to support strengthening of institutional capacity and outreach of concerned government agencies to enable effective and efficient delivery of services for AGYW in the state.
·         Life skills education includes four core elements: (i) Resilience and soft skills (ii) Rights and protections (iii) Health and nutrition. (iv) Financial literacy.
·         The project is being delivered in 17 Districts of Jharkhand. About 680,000 adolescent girls and young women in these districts are expected to benefit from the program.

 RBI ESTABLISHES COMMITTEE TO REVIEW CYBER THREATS

·         The Reserve Bank of India has set up an 11 member Inter-disciplinary Standing Committee on Cyber Security.
·         The committee will be headed by RBI Executive Director Meena Hemchandra.
·         The committee will be responsible to review the threats emerging from the use of technology, study adoption of new technology standards and suggest appropriate policy.

RANGASWAMY BECOMES THE FIRST WOMAN TO GET LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FROM BCCI:

·         As a part of Respecting Indian Woman, Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) honored Indian Skipper Shanta Rangaswamy with the most precious award i.e., Life Time Achievement award.
·         The BCCI introduced this special category of awards for the BCCI Annual Awards2016-17.

 MEITY TO PROMOTE DIGITAL TRANSACTIONS IN PLACE OF NITI

The Ministry of IT and Electronics has taken the responsibility of NITI Aayog to promote the digital transactions in India.
